Stairs are an integral part of our everyday lives. We climb them daily to reach our destination whether work, home etc. They are some ingeniously invented simple structures which we use every single day.

Similarly, stairs are also significant to our businesses. They are nothing but graphical metaphors used to display different stages in a multileveled organization. They are great to show incremental or progressive flow of events. These visuals also come very handy if you want to show success, milestones, growth etc. of your business.

With the use of stair diagrams, one can discuss the stages and levels in the organization easily and efficiently. Also, due to how creative these visuals look, they are bound to grab the audience’s attention.

So, learn how to create a staircase diagram to give an edge to your presentation.

What you will learn to create in this tutorial:

6 Steps For Successful Career Planning

Steps to Create 3-D Stairs in PowerPoint:

Insert a Rectangle-

To begin constructing a 3D staircase diagram, we will first have to create boxes which will contain the titles, icons or anything you want to show. For this go to the Insert tab. The insert tab has a Shapes option. Click on it, select a Rectangle and resize it by dragging its edges. These rectangles will serve as text or icon boxes.

Insert Rectangle and Resize

Format the Rectangle-

The next step is to format this rectangle to provide it a somewhat 3D effect. To do this, right click the shape and select Format Shape. The format shape dialogue box appears to the left side. Select 3D Format option from the dialogue box and increase the Depth to 20 pts.

Format the Rectangle

Create 3D Rotation

The next step is to further enhance the 3D effect. For this, right click the shape and select Format Shape. From the format shape dialogue box click on 3D Rotation. The 3D rotation has many options from which you can go to the Presets option and select Parallel. There are many default presets from which you can choose. Here, we have selected Off Axis 2-Top.

Create 3-D Rotation

Create copies of the shape-

Once you get a 3D rectangular shape, create its multiple copies to construct a stair like structure. For this click on the shape and select CNTRL + D command multiple times. We have created 5 copies. Now place these shapes as shown in the figure below.

Duplicate the Shape

Insert an Upward Arrow-

Add an upward arrow to your slide. For this, go to Insert and click on Shapes. In the shapes menu, from the Block Arrows select Arrow: Up and insert it to your slide. Then resize this arrow by dragging its sides as shown in the screenshot below.

Insert Upward Arrow

Format the Arrow-

After adding an arrow, you have to format it. To format the arrow right click on it and select Format Shape. The format shape dialogue box appears to the left side. Select 3D Format option from the dialogue box and increase the Depth to 20 pts.

Format the Arrow

Align the Arrow

Give 3D rotation to your arrow. For this, right click on the arrow and select Format Shape. A format shape dialogue box appears from which select 3D Rotation. Now adjust the X, Y and Z axis to align the shape perfectly. By changing each of the axis your figure will rotate differently. You can adjust the rotation as per your liking, however we have adjusted X axis to 304.8, Y to 10.9 and Z to 1.7 respectively.

Align and Create 3-D Rotation

Position the Arrow-

The next step is to position this arrow over the previous staircase layout that you have created (see the screenshot below).

This is the basic layout of a staircase.

Place the Arrow

Fill each Shape with a different Color-

After creating a layout of staircase, fill each of the shape with a different color. For this click on the shape and select Fill. The fill menu has a lot of color options, choose the one you desire and fill it in your shape. To create you customized color select More Fill Colors. Repeat this step for every shape.

Color the Shapes

Your 3-D staircase diagram is ready to ace up your next presentation.
